In my opinion, a visit of the more modern buildings is an essential complement to the historic Dresden.
Some buildings, typical of the post-war period under the socialist regime, have been renovated in the city centre, such as the Palace of Culture.

The new synagogue, an austere and impressive building.
The museum of military history, a bit far from the city centre, is not to be missed, an stricking design to say the least.
