Once a year, the Saxe hosts a street art event, during which the many guest artists take over the premises for a fortnight, then open to the public over the following three weekends. Most of the works are murals and installations.
This year, IBUG is in Leipzig and has taken over a large area of disused railway workshops (RAW Gelände). This is both an opportunity to admire artistic creations and to gain access to a very special site.
The site is located to the east of the town centre, in Engelsdorf. At the very beginning of the 20th century, wagon and locomotive repair workshops were built in this area. For decades, thousands of men and women worked here. From 1990 onwards, activity and the number of employees fell sharply. The site was on the verge of closure at the end of the 90s, and since then activity has continued at a very low level, with almost all the buildings in ruins. The site covers an area of 25,000 m2!
